PLANET WISDOM 2010 - 2011
It’s time once again for the Planet Wisdom Student Conference! This is easily one of my favorite annual events simply because of the people that I’m on the crew with. It’s evolved over the years into a family and I am blessed to be able to serve with them. I was responsible for the stage design and build, lighting design, and then lighting and screen operation during the conference.
This year we wanted a large center screen to mimic what we did last year, but something more seamless than the 3-screens. So, with the release of Renewed Vision’s Edge-Blending module, we could now do it! I got a 27′ x 9′ piece of screen material for around $150 and went to Home Depot and built a top frame for it and hung it from the truss. Because it’s just raw material, I didn’t attach anything to the bottom, but instead secure it down at each conference. SUPER cool and easy! I am using the Hitachi A200′s again to project on the screen from about 3′ away.
Flanking the screens I got these cool files from Patrick Fore here and printed them off in black and white so I could back-light them with tri-color LEDs so they could be any color I wanted. Also super cool! They are 12×4, but so light that I simply velcro-ed a piece of 2×2 onto the back and hung the wood from the truss so I wouldn’t damage the ‘stained glass’ by putting grommets in them. (I plan on having them in my house one day.)
Building the stage was a blast as always, lots of time and figuring out how to make everything fit. The screen actually doesn’t come apart: it rolls up into a 4″ wide, 30′ long piece of PVC pipe and goes in the semi truck. Simple. Lighting consists of (10) Design Spots, (10) Design Washes, (12) Design Pars and a dozen LEDs PARs to spell out “PLANET WISDOM” on the upstage truss. The letters for PLANET WISDOM are simply black construction paper that I cut out free-hand, in front of heavy frost you don’t see each individual LED bulb. Turned out AWESOME! Cool to see the letters chase back and forth and change color, and adds some nice branding to the stage.
All production gear was provided by B&L Sound and Lighting – they provide not only sound, lights and video, but the PEOPLE who actually care about making your event special. If you’re doing a youth event or worship night or conference, talk to B&L.
