In ProVideoPlayer, we will show you how it can be used to create dynamic video staging along with its use for Environmental Projection.

We’ll be doing Asian-influenced imagery during the wedding and reception – which will fit perfect with the surroundings.  (Obviously.)

I met the person in charge of the exhibit to go over how to mount the projectors in the room; and it’s going to be interesting!  I’ll post the results once we get there.

Here is a quote from one survey respondent:

“I don’t like modern churches, they seem cold,” said one survey respondent who chose the Gothic design. “I like the smell of candles burning, stained-glass windows, [and] an intimacy that’s transcendent.”

WOW.   A lot (dare I say MOST?!) of churches today are BORING!

While this might not sound like a big deal, it is to me! It says:  “Hey Church, remember that we are not of this world, and that we are called to be different.”  You could tie this in quickly to how we use technology to “be relevant to culture”…which is another topic I’m passionate and frustrated over.

Now, obviously a church’s “warmth” has a lot to do with the people INSIDE the building, but let’s just focus on what the survey was about.

And of course this is VERY interesting to me considering the number of churches wanting to do Environmental Projection to make their blank walls of their worship space into a dynamic canvas….hmmm.

Why does older church architecture remain attractive and resonant in our culture?

Traditional church buildings used as churches may be more attractive to the unchurched because they want to see something in the church that is different from other aspects of their life that are shaped by market forces and narrow demographic branding strategies. A traditional church suggests that there still are (or at least have been) people who care for more than just the bottom line and want to support something that is broader than their own interests and evoke a sense of solidity and permanence.

Tradition has a bad rap as some kind of oppressive fixed rule that can’t be violated, when actually tradition can be a more organic accumulation of the best ideas and practices that have endured across the generations. If someone builds something and it is not liked, that will be the end of that idea. However, if someone likes what is built, they may copy it. If enough people copy it, then the new thing will become a style. And if that style becomes beloved, then it will become a tradition.

I believe in the power of stories. The idea of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien reading stories to each other in the Eagle & Child tavern is enchanting to me.

Stories captivate us. They awaken our hearts and release our imaginations. There’s a reason we pay to see them in theaters and tell them to our children at bedtime. Stories thrill us and chill us; they excite us and unite us. We are changed by their message, and moved by their insights.

And it’s no wonder.

here’s the deal. there’s a few VJs/visual worshipers from out of town that are in Nashville for a few days….guys like Camron Ware, Nicholas Rivero, & Ryan Kerr. Tomorrow night (Thursday night, May 7th) at 8:30pm, we’re going to fire up a few projectors, hook up our laptops, and project on the outside of Marathon Village (aka Architectural Projection), which is where my studio is. It’s an old vibey warehouse building in downtown Nashville. It’ll be a night of VJ-ing with no agenda….just experimenting, having fun, and seeing how much of the building we can wrap in projected imagery.

so, if you are reading this and you’re thinking to yourself, “man, i want to be in on this!” then COME ON!

But here’s the deal….bring your laptop….bring your digital content….and bring a projector (or two or three or as many as you can). any gear you have, really. Hi-jack your church’s projector and join the party. (ok, so if you really can’t do all this, you can still come).

Where :: Marathon Village, 1310 Clinton Street (we’ll be in the gated parking lot that 14th Ave runs right into)…if it’s raining, we’ll just move it into my studio loft.

On the final night of the experience; I switched the music from MuteMath and Muse to Phil Whickam, Robbie Seay, Hillsong, Matt Redman, Matt Maher, and just worship VJ-ed to that…it was incredible.  I turned the portable powered Mackies up just a little bit more too…

Start thinking how the Church, starting with your local church community, could start to use this to impact and minister.

From Architectural Projection Party #2:

I’ll be doing the same thing the next two nights, on the front of First Baptist Church of Coppell, TX.  Stop on by…we had about 20 people brave the cold wind and come out to see it the first night, just hearing about it from Twitter, including a couple of good friends from Fellowship Church in Grapevine.

It was quite a visual treat!  I think we almost caused a few wrecks on the main road leading into Coppell as well.  Oops.

Will someone please get the media on this to show everyone how cool it is?!  I mean it’s on First Baptist Church…You see it in Vegas…Europe…blah blah…but I don’t this see ANYWHERE in North Texas, especially not on a church building.  It has so much potential and beauty…
